Japanese pair of cloisonné enamel vases decorated with Hō-ō mythical birds worked in silver wire, applied with silver mounts, Meiji period 1868-1912.

The mythical phoenix is symbolic of peace, justice and fidelity and was adopted as a symbol of the Imperial family. The apperance of a Hō-ō is a very good omen.
