Japanese inlaid bronze dish of circular form with a slightly raised rim decorated in shakudo, gold, silver and shibuichi taka-zogan and hon-zogan with two crows amid the branches of a cherry blossom tree, one is perched while the other is flying towards it, beneath a full moon emerging from scrolling clouds on a reddish brown ground, signed to one side in raised gold characters Isshosai Masaaki (Isshosai Shomei) 一松斎正明, Meiji period (1868-1912).
The crow (karasu カラス) is thought to be gifted with supernatural powers and is also a messenger of the gods and has a long history and cultural tradition in Japan.
The mythological Yatagarasu, a crow with three legs, was sent by the sun goddess Amaterasu to the legendary first Emperor Jimmu, to guide him on his perilous mountain journey so that he could safely reach the Yamato plains where he was fated to rule.
