Japanese black lacquer vase with a koi carp swimming beneath the surface worked in gold hiramaki-e with pine trees above, the eyes inlaid with mother-of-pearl ringed with horn signed in an oval reserve Zohiko 象彦, Meiji period 1868-1912.

The Japanese koi (nishikigoi 錦鯉) is symbolic of good luck and perseverance.
