POA

Japanese bronze group of three koi carps naturalistically modelled with a rich brown patination, the eyes inlaid in shakudō and gold. The largest carp occupies the foreground and serves as the principal focal point, while the two smaller carps are positioned alongside it at complementary angles, creating an impression of movement through water. The finely detailed scales, fins, and barbels contribute to the lifelike modelling, while the subtle variation in patination accentuates the individuality of each carp. Signed in a square plaque Shima Ikko saku 島弌光作(made by Shima Ikko), Meiji period 1868-1912.

The Koi (nishikigoi 錦鯉) is symbolic of courage, strength of will and steadfastness in adversity. They were brought to Japan from China in the 1st Century A.D. as a source of food, but in the late 19th century Japanese farmers began breeding the ornamental koi as pets for their vibrant colours and became prized possession.

Many legends are associated with the koi, the most famous is the ‘Dragon’s gate waterfall’. It tells the story of thousands koi fish swimming upstream the Yellow River against a strong currents, the one that reach the top of the huge waterfalls transform into dragons. This fable teaches that through perseverance you may overcome all difficulties in life.
