Japanese bronze modelled as a family group comprising a large turtle accompanied by two smaller ones. One juvenile turtle is shown climbing onto the larger turtle’s carapace, while the other advances alongside. The bronze has been finely cast and chased to accentuate the distinctive textures of the shell and its scaled limbs. The rich brown patina conveys the distinctive surfaces of the animals. The eyes are inlaid in shakudō and is signed on a rectangular reserve Suiraku 翠楽, Meiji period (1868–1912).
The artist Hasegawa Suiraku 長谷川翠楽 produced bronze works following the traditional casting techniques associated with Takaoka bronze metalware.
The turtle (kame 亀) has long been regarded in Japanese culture a symbol of longevity, prosperity, and auspicious fortune.
