POA

Japanese bronze group of a mother bear with her cubs realistically modelled with fine fur textures and facial expressions. The rich dark brown patina has black undertones which enhances the sculptural depth. The mother bear sits upright with a strong yet gentle posture with her front paw planted firmly on the ground. The three cubs surround her in playful and affectionate poses. One cub has climbed onto her back with its small paws hanging down, the second cub nestles closely against her side while looking upwards, and the third cub stretches forward near her front legs. The composition captures a moment of familial affection and harmony in nature, blending realism with a gentle emotional warmth characteristic of many Japanese animal sculptures. It is signed on a square plaque Asakura Yoshiharu chu 朝倉義春鋳 (cast by Asakura Yoshiharu), Meiji period 1868-1912.

Among the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido and northern Japan, the bear is regarded as a sacred being. It is believed to be a God manifested in animal form, possessing profound spiritual power. The bear is known as Kim-un Kamuy キムンカムイ meaning 'God of the Mountains'.
