Japanese pair of bronze quail censers naturalistically modelled one is standing still while the other is preening its feathers. The backs of the quails are pierced, functioning as lids for use as incense burners, a detail that seamlessly blends form and function. The eyes are inlaid in shakudo and gold with a rich brown patination enhancing the texture of the finely carved feathers, signed in a rectangular reserve Hozan 芳山, Meiji period (1868-1912).
The quails (uzura 鶉) is emblematic of the Autumn season symbolising courage from its combative character and victory in battle.
In traditional woodblock prints and paintings, quails are frequently depicted alongside millet, reinforcing the seasonal imagery.
