Japanese pair of bronze wild geese naturalistically modelled one standing with its head gracefully raised, the other in a contrasting pose with its head lowered in a foraging or resting position. The surfaces are delicately engraved and carved to capture the nuanced texture of feathers, with meticulous detail evident throughout.
The artist’s signature Seiun 晴雲, is chiseled into the bronze, late Meiji period (1868-1912).
Kano Seiun I 加納晴雲 also known as Kano Ginzaburo was born in 1871 and studied metalworking under the famous artist Oshima Joun (1858-1940). He exhibited in 1900 at the Paris Exposition Universelle a bronze group of sparrows and also participated at the Tokyo Taishō Exhibition, Ueno Park in 1914.
The wild goose (kari 雁) is a traditional motif in Japanese art, frequently appearing in paintings, folding screens, and decorative objects. It is emblematic of the autumn season and often symbolizes fidelity and conjugal harmony, as wild geese are believed to mate for life and fly in pairs.
