Japanese cloisonné enamel vase worked in silver and gilt wire decorated with panels of Hō-ō mythical birds, chrysanthemums and details of stylised dragons, the rim and foot with lozenge borders unsigned, Meiji period 1868-1912.
The mythical phoenix is symbolic of peace, justice and fidelity and was adopted as a symbol of the Imperial family. The appearance of a Hō-ō is a very good omen.
